Meet The Family
'The Power of Taste and Tradition'
Fortes Ice Cream Parlour Mumbles is more than just a Parlour—it's a testament to the enduring spirit of a family's journey, a legacy of love, and a dedication to crafting unforgettable frozen delights.
Our story begins with the courage of an Italian immigrant, my great grandfather, who crossed oceans to build a better life. Leaving Italy behind, he embarked on a journey to Scotland, working tirelessly to save enough to bring his beloved wife to his side. Their united dreams led them to Scotland, where they raised three children and laid the foundation of our family's legacy.
In pursuit of opportunities that promised prosperity, our family's journey continued. A partnership with another relation beckoned, and the Macari family packed their dreams and moved to Brighton. The quest for success and ideal hospitality venues drove one of our cousins, Mr Forte, to traverse the length and breadth of Britain. His discerning eye for perfect locations became the cornerstone of our brand's identity, and the name Forte's was born.
In 1936, our ice cream journey reached its pivotal point when Fortes Ice Cream Mumbles opened its doors in Oystermouth square. As history unfolded, World War II cast its shadow, and the Macari family faced the challenges it brought head-on. Amidst the adversity and the unfortunate hostility towards Italians, Guiseppe Macari found himself interned, leaving a steadfast manageress to keep the parlour alive until normality returned.
The torch of resilience and determination passed to the three sons—Olimpio, Elio, and Antonio—each playing a vital role in nurturing the parlours in Union St, Oystermouth, and Limeslade. Though Olimpio's flame was extinguished too soon, the family's determination burned brighter. Despite the council's demolition of the Oystermouth Parlour, the Limeslade Parlour stood as a steadfast testament to the family's commitment to serving their community.
Amidst the challenges, my mother, Lucia Macari, stepped up to continue the family legacy, running the Limeslade Parlour with the same passion that has characterized our journey for generations. For the past decade, myself, Amelia Macari, have stood alongside my mother, ensuring that the legacy lives on through every scoop, every smile, and every moment shared over ice cream.
As the fourth generation nurtures the Parlour's flame, the hope for the future continues to burn. With my daughter poised to embrace the legacy, Fortes Ice Cream Parlour is a living tribute to the indomitable spirit of a family who, for five generations, have blended love, tradition, and Ice Cream into an unforgettable experience. Our Parlour isn't just about frozen treats; it's about cherishing history, celebrating togetherness, and crafting a sweet future that echoes the courage of my great grandparents and the dedication of my family.
